MICKY AND THE MOTORCARS (US) Naive Naive |
Americana artists “Micky and the Motorcars” originates from Idaho and is led by front man Micky Braun. Together with his brother Gary and childhood friends Mark McCoy and Travis Hardy the motorcars would not be complete with the added guitarist Joseph Deeb. The Origins for this band are quite interesting because of the fact that the brothers Braun are the sons of famous western swing legend Muzzie Braun. The twosome had two more brothers named Cody & Willie and the four of them where childhood legends in Idaho as Muzzie Braun & the Little Braun Brothers band. Later on both Willy & Cody left the band and went to Austin to form “Reckless Kelly”, soon after Micky and Gary followed their siblings with “Micky and the Motorcars”. But the family ties together each year for a band reunion, a party that not only attracts musicians but also thousands of partygoers. The band changed over the years but somehow Micky and the Motorcars where always a synonym for good music. Naive is the latest installment of Micky and his band (with new added guitarist Kris Farrow) and it is already the fourth album for the band. On “Naive” they take their Americana/alt.country a little bit further into the same direction and bring you an album with 12 outstanding tunes. Bloodhshot is a great rocking tune that injects some fuel into the album, something I’m missing on a couple of occasions but even slower tracks like “Don’t Be sad” or “Seeds” sounds attractive to me. “Seashell” is tune like a gentle flowing river, with some nice additional music by Michael Ramos on his pump organ. “Long enough to leave” is, according to the frontman of the band about being on the road. Every time you are somewhere and you start to feel comfortable you have to leave for another place, another gig. Title track “Naive” is a common woman cheats husband song. You know coming home and finding your wife in bed with another guy… Although their sound isn’t highly original and thanks to the production by his brother Cody it is often compared to the outlaw rock of “Reckless Kelly”. But in all naivety I have to say that Micky and The Motercars are much more then a meager copy of Reckless Kelly. The family influence will always be there but the band is a stand-alone act fore sure. Mr. Blue Boogie
